Myopia and Astigmatism

Myopia and Astigmatism

Mistake in the visual focus that causes difficult in the vision of the objects which are far. CAUSES, INCIDENCE AND FACTORS OF RISK

 Normal  Myopia and Astigmatism

With this visual problem the objects which are near are seen very clear, but the objects which are far are blurred. This is the result that the visual image is focused in front of the retina and not directly on it.

This can be caused because the globe of the eye is excessively lengthened or because the crystalline (the lens which is on the eye) has a focal distance too short.

The myopia, is generally developed in the school age and this often stabilizes at the age of 20 years. Until this age this can develop very fast and requires several changes of graduation of the lens or contact lens. This affects in the same way the men and women and there is a clear familiar predisposition.
The astigmatism is a distortion of the vision that is produced because the cornea (the transparent film that is in front of the eye) has a odd form. When a person has astigmatisms the vision is always blurred.

The astigmatism is a common problem. Many people has an astigmatism very light that does not affect its vision. Sometimes the persons who have astigmatism half close the eyes to focus in a better way the objects. This does not damage the vision but it can cause headache.

The astigmatism can be accompanied by myopia (short sight) o longsightedness (far vision). The astigmatism can be corrected with lens, contact lens or surgery.

Symptoms (Myopia)

ˇ Blurred vision of the objects which are far
ˇ Squint.
ˇ Headache.
ˇ Ocular Tension

Analysis and Test (Myopia)

A general exam of the eye, or ophtalmological exam includes:

ˇ Proof of the visual sharpness .
ˇ Proof of the refraction .
ˇ Proof of the vision of colour.
ˇ Proof of the muscles of the eyes
ˇ Exam with lamp of cut.
ˇ Exam of the retina.

Treatment (Myopia)

This is compensated very easy with the use of lens or contact lens, depending of the case and the problem of refraction.

The lens:

ˇ Advantages. These do not have any effect on the eye.
ˇ Disadvantages: Aesthetics, sports, profession, bath, etc...

The contact lens:

ˇ Advantages. Better visual correction than the lens, aesthetics, activities.
ˇ Disadvantages Intolerance to the same, cornea ulcers and infections in some cases serious, it is necessary a proper hygiene.

The surgery is indicated in some cases of myopia..

Prognosis (Myopia)

If the myopia is no detected and corrected very soon this can have social, emotional and educational consequences.

Complications (Astigmatism)

Related to the use of contact lens (possible ulcers in the cornea and infections). Complications of the radial queratotomía, including the failure of the surgery in the correction of the vision, pain, ulcers in the cornea and infections.
Prevention (Astigmatism)
ˇ Avoid to read with faint light or candle
ˇ Do not read on the car
ˇ Do not rub the eyes.
